Rootbound

Friday, March 14th, 2008

When I first moved down to SC, you could see a few of this plant’s roots through the clear vase. Now, though, I’m not sure that you could get the thing out of its container!

I tried to think of a spiritual analogy from the idea of being rootbound, but wasn’t successful. Any ideas?

In other news, today was a gorgeous day to do a cookout on the back porch of the office…

No Man Hath Seen God

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Last month, The Weekly Reminder ran a series based on 1 John 4. It is an amazing passage of Scripture, especially in dealing with our relationships with other members of the Body of Christ.

1 John 4:1-6

1 John 4:7-11

1 John 4:12-16

1 John 4:17-21

While I was writing those, there was one phrase in the chapter that just never seemed to make sense. In the middle of John’s writing on love, and why we love God, there is a seemingly unrelated sentence: “No man hath seen God at any time.” Right after saying that, the apostle goes on talking about love, talking about how God’s love is perfected in us when He dwells in us:

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

This morning, as I was meditating on the passage, this phrase jumped out at me again, only this time I realized why it is there. It is not random–in fact, it fits perfectly. You see, we ought to love one another, as we are told in verse 11. But why is that important? Because although no man has seen God, it is entirely possible to see God’s perfected love in the lives of His children.

What a responsibility that is. No one can physically see God, not the believer, not the unbeliever. But both can see God reflected in us. Does demonstrating our love to the Body of Christ matter? It absolutely does–it is how people see God.

The Salad Kick

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

I was elated when my office-mate suggested yesterday that we resurrect what has become affectionately known as the Salad Kick. Basically, it consists of a few of us going in on wholesale boxes of fresh produce and eating salad until it comes out of our ears.

It was one of the things I wanted to do after the bar, and let me tell you, folks, for the past two days I have been in salad heaven.

…he said, with a sigh of relief…

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

I intended to make my relief official much earlier than this, but post-bar celebrations and Internet problems have kept me from doing so until now.

Now…now back in South Carolina, attacking my desk with a shovel, and being glad that it is over. It is tough to be 100% glad, with months to wait until results come out, but for now I am overjoyed to be done.

And trying to remember all of the things on my “after the Bar” list…

I am so grateful for all of the support that was given to me over the course of this Bar ordeal. So many of you gave me hospitality, provided some variant of caffeine, or dropped an e-mail or note on my Facebook wall. Your encouragements and prayers were really instrumental in getting me through it.

Now the preparation is done, and the hard part begins…the long wait for results. Let the nailbiting begin!
